Phil Mickelson beat Scott Verplank on Sunday to conquer the Houston Open in Humble, Tex., his first triumph since Masters last year.
The success placed Mickelson to number 3 in the world ranking, and Tiger Woods, who didn’t play in the tourney, dropped down to number 7. It’s the first time ever Mickelson has been in front of Woods in the world rankings since the week prior to Woods won the 1997 Masters Tournament.
